This October, some of the best concerts of the year are crammed into one month. Artists like Example, although relatively unknown in the United States, will give an awesome at intimate venue The Social. Other groups, like the Lumineers, are playing in Tampa, and although the USF Sun Dome is relatively far away, The Lumineers will be a concert not to miss. October provides a handful of opportunities to see concerts of a variety of genres in the span of a month.

-Example is a singer, rapper, and DJ from Fulham, England. Born Elliot John Gleave, he chose the stage name Example because his initials are E.G., which is the Latin abbreviation for the phrase “for example.” His second album, Won’t Go Quietly, became enormously popular in Great Britain, peaking at number six in the UK. Songs from the album, such as “Kickstarts,” gained major success and expanded Example’s worldwide fame. His next single, “Changed the Way You Kissed Me,” was an instant number one in the UK, the majority of Europe and Australia. Example’s North American tour is the artist’s first time touring the United States. His music includes upbeat and bouncy songs that make you want to stand up on the table and dance. If you want to discover an artist that will become huge in a few months, then you should be at The Social on October 11.
Atlas Genius

-After opening for Imagine Dragons last February at the House of Blues, Atlas Genius will be returning to Orlando. They will be supporting their debut album, When It Was Now. The three brothers and their friend, all from Adelaide, South Australia, boomed in popularity with their song “Trojans” in 2011. The song was promoted on MTV’s 120 Minutes and on the Alternative Nation channel on Sirius XM radio. “Trojans” peaked at number four on the Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. Attributed to their unusual electronic pop sound, critics don’t place Atlas Genius with one specific sound or genre of indie rock. Some songs on the album are compared closely with the Kings of Leon or The Killers, while others lean more towards a classic ‘80s feel.
Matt Nathanson
October 19th at the House of Blues
7 PM
Tickets from $35
-If you like Mat Kearney, Howie Day, Parachute
– Recommended Songs: “Earthquake Weather,” “Sky High Honey”
-Matt Nathanson has been writing and producing music since before many of us were born. His music continues to evolve and remain prevalent even today. Nathanson, born in Massachusetts, released his first album in 1993. Since then, he has produced 10 albums. His most popular, Some Mad Hope, included the platinum selling’s song, “Come On Get Higher,” which sold 1.8 million copies. Nathanson’s stop in Orlando will be his “Last of the Great Pretenders Tour,” named after his new album. Last of the Great Pretenders is heavily influenced by the artist’s current city, San Francisco. Most songs on the album give a soft rock feel. Only a few of the songs follow the familiar acoustic strumming of Nathanson’s guitar that are found on his past albums.
The Lumineers
October 19th at the USF Sun Dome
7:15 PM
Tickets from $35
– If you like Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters and Men
-Recommended Songs: “Stubborn Love,” “Big Parade,” “Flowers in Your Hair”
-Debatably the most successful indie band to currently be touring, The Lumineers will be stopping in Tampa on their tour supporting their self-titled debut album. The group started when Wesley Shultz and Jeremiah Fraites began writing and performing music together around New York City. They decided to move to Denver, Colorado, in pursuit of breaking the music industry. The Lumineers signed with Onto Entertainment after the managers saw a video of the band performing “Ho Hey” in an apartment. “Ho Hey” later became the group’s first single and biggest hit. It sold over 2 million copies and reached double Platinum in six months. The Lumineers were nominated for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album at the Grammy Awards. Their music is a chirpy yet soothing blend of folk with an alternative and gospel feel. The Lumineers’ unique sound is crafted from Shultz’s distinctive voice and the group’s use of various instruments. Songs like “Stubborn Love” and “Big Parade” incorporate the cello masterfully. Even though Tampa is a bit of a drive, a live performance by The Lumineers would be a quite memorable concert.
This month gives music lovers many chances to experience concerts of various genres. Most start at low prices, which makes October a fantastic opportunity to broaden your music tastes.
