Builders Club’s annual adopt-a-family food drive at Trinity Prep has been helping families get food and presents for the holiday season for over 25 years according to art teacher Kimberly Moreland-Garnett who serves as head of Builders Club. Moreland-Garnett says she works with a liaison at Lake Howell High School to find the families that need help.
This year, Trinity Prep students have provided food and presents to more than thirty families ranging in size.
“I have one family that’s just a mom and a child all the way to five kids and three adults,” Moreland-Garnett said.
The adopt a family tradition is a way for Trinity students to give back to the community and help make sure that everyone can have a merry Christmas and a happy Thanksgiving
“I enjoy that we’re able to help out people who may not have as much,” Builders Club member Brayden Kells said. “They needed something and now we are able to provide for them.”
Builders Club works hard both individually and as a group to help out families this holiday season.
“I bought canned yams and cranberry sauce, and I brought money so we could get a turkey for the families,” Builders Club volunteer Zara Ray said. “I like how the families can have a nice holiday dinner after what may have been a very hard year.”
This year is Moreland-Garnett’s first year as the head of Builders Club after math teacher Lynn Wilbur left the school. She expressed troubles with arranging help for families with special accommodations/needs.
“How are you going to do Christmas for someone that’s living in a car?” Moreland-Garnett said. “It’s very different from the Christmas you think about.”
While this is true, students have found joy in the holiday gift of giving.
“The best feeling of holiday spirit [is] when providing for those less fortunate,” Kells said.
Trinity’s Builders Club has done this tradition for well over 25 years and provided for hundreds of people and families and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon!
