After losing numerous star players to graduation last year, the softball team was expected to begin a rebuilding period starting this season. After all, the team lost pitcher Sydney Carpenter, who still competes at Emory University, catcher Jessica Andrews, first baseman Laura Packard and center fielder Katie Yergler, who still plays for Wheaton College.
However, this year’s team had different plans.
Due to the school’s tradition for a winning softball team, as the squad has made five state tournaments in the last six years, this year’s roster is completely focused on continuing the legacy.
Just last year, Trinity made it to the Final Four at states, and two years ago Trinity narrowly missed winning the title after losing 1-0 in the finals against American Heritage. The program’s last championship was in 2007.
Nevertheless, this team has proven that they are still capable of being a powerhouse despite the departures. Under head coach Kathy Finnucan, the team managed to earn District Runner-Up. Not a bad feat for a team that possessed a rough regular-season record of five wins and eleven losses.
However, the future is exceptionally bright for this squad.
Behind junior Christina Marchena, who has excelled as the starting pitcher, sophomore Brooke Davis and freshman Josie Starling, TPS has a solid core for the future.
The loss of seniors Hannah Parker and Erin Dickson will certainly hurt the team, but this young roster is destined to continue the winning tradition here at Trinity Prep.
Erin Dickson, a leader on this late blooming team, wants the “younger girls to know never to give up, even if you get down.” Additionally, she exclaims, “the future is bright for TPS softball.”
Hannah Parker also exclaims that, “there is no question Trinity Prep will remain on top of the Central Florida softball.”
