While most Trinity students were preparing for their weekends or relaxing last Friday, the Trinity Boys and Girls Varsity swimming teams were preparing for their state meet. After another astounding and record breaking season, the girls team looked to finish the year strong. On the boys side, Senior George Reuter—who recently signed with the University of Chicago—looked to help lead the team to a strong finish as well.
In October, the girls had one of their most impressive meets ever at Montverde Academy. Claire Maiocco broke the 100-meter Butterfly National Short Course Meters National Record with 1:01.06 and the speedy team of Grace Olivardia, Caroline White, Claire Maiocco and Summer Heidish broke the National Record in the 200-meter Freestyle Relay with a 1:46.98. The team continued to build on their success at the state meet.
The 200-meter Medley Relay, consisting of Maiocco, Olivardia, White and Heidish came in first place, set a school record and qualified as All-American (top 100 in the nation in all states and classes). The same group of girls placed fourth in the 200-Freestyle Relay. White and Maiocco shined individually. Maiocco finished fourth in the 50 meter Freestyle as well as third in the 100-meter Butterfly. Her third place finish earned her automatic All-American once again. White finished second in the 200-meter Individual Medley which gave her her second automatic All-American of the meet. She also finished first in the 100-meter Breaststroke which was her most impressive performance. She finished first overall while setting a school and state record and once again earning automatic All-American. White recently signed to continue swimming at Williams college.
After winning districts and regionals, the girls ended the season with another impressive finish by ending fifth overall at states.
“This season was incredible,” said White. “It was a great way to end my Trinity swimming career.”
The boys team had a strong end to their season as well. The Boys 200-meter Freestyle Relay, consisting of Matt, George Reuter, Luke Reese Gawronski broke the school record. The same group finished 2nd in the 400-Freestyle Relay while breaking a school record and earning All-American consideration. They finished a solid 15th overall at the state meet.
Both teams deserve a great deal of recognition for their amazing seasons. And being with such young teams, it is likely that we will only be seeing more success in the future.
