At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, Trinity began its construction of the Nochur Sankar Science Center. As a result, what was once a practice field is now a parking lot. The field was previously used by numerous sports offered at Trinity, forcing coaching staff and players to adapt to the change.
Assistant Head of Athletics Rita Kienle acknowledged that, due to the change, all teams will need some practice time on Hubbard Field.
“We try to make sure that the middle school girls and boys teams and the JV boys team will get some time on the game field as well because they need to be able to practice their spacing,” Kienle said.
Cooperation is imperative, especially when the girls and boys varsity soccer season overlaps with lacrosse winter workouts.
“We’re all part of a bigger team and we have to work together,” Kienle said.
Along with coordinating shared team needs, Director of Athletics Colin Sullivan said they also have to keep in mind the overuse of these fields.
“If a team comes to us and wants to practice on a field and we don’t feel it can handle that sort of wear and tear, we’re going to find another suitable location for them,” Sullivan said.
According to varsity girls soccer coach Sebastiaan Blickman, it comes down to creatively using the resources available.
“All I need is a little patch and we can do a lot of our work,” Blickman said.
Despite these challenges, players may benefit in the future from experiencing the difficulty of having limited space and challenging terrain to play and practice upon.
“It’s not the greatest grass in some of the areas, but that’s all good because you get to practice,” Blickman said. “You don’t know what field you’re going to play on in the future. Not every field is going to be perfect. And so you get to practice just dealing with what’s in front of you.”
