As evidenced by the long lines, the Grille is very popular among students, and Food Director Chris Behrens aims to keep it that way by adding two new desserts and an array of beverages to the Grille menu.
In September, Behrens added three new foods and drink options to the Grille, and the students’ opinions are largely positive. He added lemon cake, coffee cake and many flavors of the bottled drink ICE.
The ICE drinks cost $2.00 each. The five flavors available are Strawberry Watermelon, Classic Lemonade, Lemon Lime, Kiwi Strawberry and Grape Raspberry. Each of the drinks tastes exactly like their title, and you can notice each of the flavors. Some taste more like one fruit than the other fruit they have in them. For example, the Kiwi Strawberry flavor tastes more like kiwis than strawberries.
Costing $2.50 the lemon cake is a flavorful pastry. It’s the size of a thick piece of bread and tastes like sweet lemonade. As far as the texture, it feels like you are eating cold cake from Whole Foods.
The coffee cake also costs $2.50. Despite its name, it is hard to taste the coffee, and tastes more like cinnamon than anything else. The cake is not buttery, but it’s very crumbly and falls apart if you don’t eat it with caution.
“When I bought [the pastries], all of them sold out that afternoon,” Behrens said.
Eighth-grader Lucas Bowman has an eye for the new pastries that Behrens added to the Grille.
“I think that the two new pastries are super good, they taste great, and I’ve been getting them every week,” Bowman said.
Although most people say that the new pastries and drinks are popular, some have yet to try them.
“I have not eaten the new foods at the Grille because they’re too expensive, and I would rather have something else,” eighth-grader Maddi Taylor said.
Some of the other foods students like more are the ice cream cups and the ice cream sandwiches.
“The ice cream sandwiches are still so much better than the new cakes,” Taylor said.
When Behrens is adding new food to the Grille, he said he likes to keep in mind students’ allergies.
Even though Behrens controls the stock of the Grille and does not have to add anything new, he still wants to keep the food in the Grille fresh and new for students.
“That’s what I want to do–I want to make you guys happy,” Behrens said.
