Cabal coaches students to success

Mixed Martial Arts and kickboxing referee Isiah Cabal uses his coaching skills in both the wrestling arena and in class, teaching AP and Honors World History. With Cabal’s prior experience teaching at Paul J. Hagerty High School for 13 years, he hopes to help students uncover the past of historians and gain confidence in themselves. Cabal also plans to perfect the craft of teaching at Trinity by presenting material in a thematic and conceptual way rather than simply introducing facts.
“I’ve always loved history,” Cabal said. “I just wanted to keep doing it, hopefully sharing that love with other people.”
Cabal is also currently a Question Leader on the College Board. Each June, Cabal spends most of his time grading AP World History free responses from students’ exams.
“Being a Question Leader kind of gives me a good of idea of…what to do, what not to do [for students],” Cabal said.
When Cabal isn’t in the classroom, he referees Mixed Martial Arts and kickboxing. Cabal is a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, as well as a former coach on the freshman football staff at Hagerty.
With Cabal’s experience training football players and wrestlers, he will now take on the title of coach Cabal, as he will be coaching the Boy’s Weightlifting Team later in the spring.
“I want to grow the program, continue the success,” Cabal said. “Hopefully progress to the next level. We would love to see state qualifiers, state placers, state champs, olympic qualifiers eventually.”
Cabal’s hobbies include watching Parks and Recreation, eating Filipino cuisine and surfing.
“I surfed a pipeline in Hawaii,” Cabal said. “You fall and get held under. It feels like you are in a washing machine.”
