Trinity’s addition to the Fine Arts curriculum comes with the addition of a broadcast class that would serve students to allow them to break into the online journalism space. Led by head football coach Brian Kells, a veteran educator with 23 years of video production experience with Volusia County Schools, the course is built on a foundation that goes far beyond the camera.
“My experience as a head football coach has had a direct impact on how I approach building a broadcasting program,” Kells said. “Both (football and sports broadcasting) require clear structure, strong culture and intentional skill development.”
Offered as an elective worth 0.5 credit, the class teaches students to create engaging content across live streaming, short videos and podcasting, all while developing essential journalistic skills.
Eighth grader Russell Kropp is one who signed up for the class next year and sees it as a tangible way to hone his interest in broadcasting.
“I have had the opportunity to participate in live broadcasts across multiple different sports, so when I discovered that a dedicated broadcasting class was being offered, I was immediately excited by the prospect,” Kropp said.
Having both Kells’ input from the field and from behind the camera allows for a comprehensive view of all aspects of the school.
“Broadcasting has the power to significantly elevate the visibility and culture of Trinity athletics and clubs by telling our story in a consistent, professional, and engaging way,” Kells said. “Not everyone can attend games or events but through live streams, highlight packages and weekly shows, but we can showcase our athletes, students and big moments to a much wider audience.”
One key element of broadcast class is it allows students to build their public speaking skills as well as a passion for journalism.
“I am particularly hopeful that this course will give me a deeper understanding of what goes on behind the scenes of a professional broadcast,” Kropp said. “I am eager to strengthen my ability to deliver color commentary, the (background information and analysis that broadcasters provide during a live broadcast) in a way that is both informative and engaging for the audience.”
