A haze or craze of the VMA’s

Macklemore wins the award of Best Message with his hit song “Same Love” featuring Mary Lambert.

A director yells cut and a restless Taylor Swift rolls her eyes at the fact of having to record another take after all ready giving her all to the 3,000 previous takes. This is just a little portion of what goes into creating a music video.

Every year we come to the same point in the fall where all artists are competing for the most original and dimensional honor, that of a “ MTV Video Music Award.”

First, the outfits were outrageous. Rita Ora has this “be different” vibe, but this time she went to complete catastrophe. How many birds did the designer have to kill in order to complete this train wreck? Too many. Someone needs to call PETA.

Oh but, Selena, she never fails. Her outfit was sheer (pun intended) perfection. The color and  cut complemented her perfectly. She didn’t look uncomfortable even though the dress had a wired bodice. It was classy but different.

Past the red carpet and into the VMAs, we go to view a night that was completely unforgettable.

To begin with, Gaga. There is only one word and four letters to describe one of the most intricate human beings of our time.  Her performance was a completely different way to begin the VMA’s. Starting off her performance looking like a nun to stripping down to barely anything, she took the stage by storm.

If a good show is in need, just ask Lady Gaga to take the stage. She still brings the most outlandish but revolutionary performances even though she has been out of the entertainment scene for about two years. No one could have opened this award show better. Let’s just say, Gaga is back.

Macklemore gave one of the most moving performances I have ever witnessed. Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity. It was just him, his band, his backup singer, and his words (oh and Jennifer Hudson).

The lights, the costumes, and the glitter all seemed to fade into the back of Barclay Center as the message of Macklemore’s “Same Love” came forward. Equality didn’t seem so far fetched when Macklemore’s talented voice revealed the message.

Macklemore embodies what performing is about – a representation of the art you have made, what it has meant to you, and explaining it to others. Incredible, Macklemore.

So what makes a music video climb to the top of the charts and knock the socks off of viewers and critics? Ask music gurus like Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Robin Thicke, Macklemore, or Justin Timberlake just how it is done. All five artists were nominated for Video of the Year. However, out of these five insanely well-respected artists, only one could take the infamous “moon man” home.

Justin Timberlake took home the gold. He was also presented with the Michael Jackson Award that he so humbly dedicated to his former band mates of “NSYNC.”

He made a remarkable music video and his performance was on point (even it was if too long). Though NSYNC said “Bye, Bye, Bye” to the music world, Justin has not lost his spark.

Other than the highest award of Video of the Year, there are many awards that die hard fans work so hard to get for their idols.

This year, the “Song of the Summer” award went to One Direction’s “Best Song Ever.”

This award seemed odd to me. One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” didn’t come out until late summer so it should have gone to a tune that had been blasted on the radio all summer long.

The Best Female award went to Taylor Swift. Some of the awards went askew. Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You were Trouble” was just a rip off of Lana Del Rey’s “Ride” music video.  Del Rey’s video was different and intriguing something that Swift’s video completely lacked because of the plagiarism she committed with this video. The award should have gone to someone who decided to take a more original approach. Also, who can even take this song seriously? All I hear when I listen to the song is a faint screaming goat in the background.

The Best Male Video went to Bruno Mars. But, it was kind of a toss up between Ed Sheeran and Bruno. Even though I had my fingers crossed that Ed would take home the moon man, Bruno deserved it just as much as Sheeran.

My favorite category was “Artist to Watch.” The talent in that category was incredible like The Weeknd to Twenty One Pilot’s (expecting one of those two to win). Fan favorites like Iggy Azalea seemed to have it by the neck. But, of course, the fans chose the newest Justin Bieber.

It is not that Austin Mahone is lacking in talent, just originality. This world doesn’t need another leather-covered tween hopping around on stages and covering the walls of 10 year girl’s old bed rooms.  Austin, please don’t be a carbon copy of the Biebs. Keep to your own pace.

Huge names attended this event and to satisfy those attendees, they VMA’s had to be huge.   From serious to silly the award show covered all of the corners of entertainment and put on a show that will be remembered for a lifetime.
