Predicting fads this summer

News Editor Vikas Bommineni comments on current trends and predicts which ones will live through the summer.

With the conclusion of yet another school year, summer is finally here. With the extended period of sunshine comes a new wave of fads as well as a resurgence of old fads that will dominate this summer’s pop culture.

Virtual reality headsets

Although they leave you in a computer-generated simulation of an environment, these headsets won’t be leaving the list of consumers’ favorites this summer. As a fairly low-cost consumer electronic, virtual reality headsets will be innovated by big businesses like Google and have widespread appeal. Business Insider estimates that the device will grow at an exponential rate during this summer alone. The device will doubtfully replace real world interactions as other recent technologies have had a habit of doing.

The Dab

This dance move will retain its popularity into the summer. Instead of trying to sneeze into their elbows, newer variations of the dance will be longer and involve all parts of your body. It will find entry into several new music videos and reignite the passions of hip-hop enthusiasts worldwide. Politicians will continue to try to join in with new variations of the dance, but their alterations will fizzle out. Inspired by creative music videos by Migos and IHeartMemphis, the younger generation will try to create new dance moves and eventually replace the dab. (Hence completing the circle of dance)

Hoverboards

Even amidst reports of these new transportation devices spontaneously combusting on fire, they will continue to grow in popularity. Hoverboards underwent an evolution to resemble a combination of a ripstik and a scooter. The idea of levitating above the ground and associations with famous artists, such as the rapper Drake, will propel sales. Next time you see them, hoverboard users will be waving goodbye to all their haters while they float away.

Pant suits

Despite the summer heat, pantsuits are coming back. With Hillary contending for presidency, pant suits will reclaim their place in the fashion world. The world will yet again be recaptured in amazement at the boldness of suits. As the perfect fit for a world needing its functionality and business-styled demeanor, the pant suits will reemerge on top of all other formal wear for women. Patterns on pantsuits will become a summer trend, along with polka dots. Maybe Sarah Palin will even return from her exile in Alaska and return to bask in the glory of pantsuits.
